What is Bowen Technique?

Steps to good health

Bowen Technique is a cross-fibre muscle release technique that balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. There are occasional pauses between moves to give the body the required time to allow the body to reset and heal itself.

There are various schools of protocol originating from the teachings of Tom Bowen, the founder of the Bowen Technique. Bowen, like any other technique or model of bodywork, has evolved as others improve it to make it more effective and relevant as a therapy.

The healing is not considered massage, but rather a non invasive muscle release technique consisting of a series of gentle cross-fibre moves that challenge the fascia tissue and have long term benefits so long as the injury or pain is not re-aggravated.

A treatment usually requires the client to lie on a bed or treatment couch and can be performed through light clothing. Sessions can last up to an hour. It is usually recommended to have two to three sessions of the Bowen Technique with a break of five to ten days between each session.

What are the benefits of Bowen?

Bowen Technique strives to find the origin of a problem and is therefore very effective for muscular-skeletal problems, including ankle, knee, lower back and neck pain. Bowen Technique is also an effective treatment for all age groups, including newborns to the aged, horses and small animals. See Baby Bowen for more information.

 A Bowen Treatment

A treatment consists of small gentle moves each at a specific site on the body. There is no forceful manipulation, just light cross-fibre moves over a muscle, tendon or ligament. This cross-fibre muscle release technique stimulates and balances energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. There are regular pauses between the series of gentle moves to give the body the required time to allow the body to reset and heal itself.

Bowen is gentle and effective, with substantial relief frequently attained after the first session. In most cases, only two or three treatments are required one week apart.

Origins

Bowen Therapy is a holistic and multi-dimensional approach to pain relief and healing that has achieved remarkable results over the past 50 years. Bowen Technique was pioneered by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria in the late 1960’s.

Tom Bowen (1916-1982) devoted his life to developing this gentle and innovative approach to pain relief, in Geelong, Australia. His successes attracted professional onlookers, intrigued by his method of treatment and successful outcomes. Eventually, his work was documented and put into a teaching model where others could learn his method of working. The original Bowen Technique has been successfully taught overseas and its main headquarters are still based in Australia.

Like many successful models, there are now various offshoots of the original Bowen model being taught and practised. However, the original Bowen Technique continues to be taught and practised both in Australia and world-wide, with various offshoots, now seen as natural developmental improvements.

He was a ‘natural healer’ who began treating people for their various ailments with effective and fast results. He discovered that the underlying source of many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health problems could be found in the soft tissue of fascia. Fascia embraces all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles. Fascial dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve and organ in the body with nerve compression, muscle shortening, skeletal and organ displacement as typical examples. He had an abiding interest in improving his knowledge of the body and how to make his treatments more effective, particularly given the large number of clients he saw in a single day.  Tom Bowen is understood to have been influenced by the principles of acupressure, meridian therapy, shiatsu and massage in the development of his method.

Baby Bowen

Even newborns benefit from a Baby Bowen treatment. All babies are not born equally. Bowen is gentle and effective for your baby’s health to relieve any physical discomfort resulting from an arduous birth or a maladjustment that may be affecting their sleeping or digestion. Some things can be hard to quantify and most new parents will have a checklist of what their baby’s needs are; and when their baby continues to cry and they can’t be pacified, then it’s the parents turn to cry with equal distress!

Bowen can make a subtle and measurable difference to your baby’s health and your own wellbeing and peace of mind. Book in for a session with your baby and learn how you can treat your own baby with 5 simple moves.
